Kickboxing is a combat sport that originated in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s. It is a hybrid martial art that combines elements of boxing and karate, incorporating both punches and kicks. Over the years, kickboxing has gained significant popularity worldwide, with various styles and variations emerging in different countries.
Influence of Karate and Boxing: The foundation of American kickboxing lies in traditional karate and Western boxing. Karate, brought to the United States by Japanese and Okinawan masters in the mid-20th century, introduced Americans to striking techniques and forms. Boxing, already a well-established sport in America, contributed its footwork, punching techniques, and competitive structure.
Full-Contact Karate: In the 1960s and early 1970s, traditional karate competitions in the United States were predominantly non-contact or semi-contact. Frustrated by the limitations and lack of realistic combat scenarios, some martial artists sought to create a full-contact version, where competitors could engage in continuous, unrestricted striking.
Development of American Kickboxing: Figures like Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Chuck Norris played pivotal roles in the development of American kickboxing. These martial artists, trained in traditional karate and influenced by boxing, began to experiment with full-contact sparring, laying the groundwork for the new sport.

At FMA Kickboxing Academy, we believe that martial arts training encompasses more than just physical fitness; it also fosters mental and emotional growth. Our philosophy emphasizes the principles of respect, self-discipline, and perseverance. We are dedicated to creating a positive and supportive environment where students can thrive in their kickboxing classes and develop both on and off the mat. FMA Kickboxing are proud to promote inclusivity and equality.

Join our open-level kickboxing classes, where you'll engage learning how to punch, kick, use knee and elbow strikes on pads and bags. Kickboxing training sessions also incorporate functional strength and HIIT training, making it an excellent way to enhance your overall fitness and toning. Each kickboxing class lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes per session. We also promote light contact sparring sessions at the discretion of our students. FMA Kickboxing Academy welcome individuals of all fitness levels.

Mark has been training in martial arts since 1988 when he first attended his first Karate class in the style of Wado-Ryu. Mark now holds a 4th degree blackbelt in this discipline and is a senior instructor with Sensei Lee Mulvey at their sister school at FMA Karate Academy. The website for Karate can be found here: www.fmakarateacademy.co.uk
Looking to build on his Karate knowledge Mark started his kickboxing journey in 2011 and quickly grew from a student to being a coach. Mark, with Sensei Lee Mulvey (4th Dan in Kickboxing) established FMA Kickboxing Academy in 2014. Over the years, Mark and Lee have dedicated themselves to both training and teaching Kickboxing. One of Marks proudest moments was in coaching a student to become the English full contact Kickboxing Champion.
Karate and Kickboxing have been an integral part of Mark's life and he is passionate about passing on his knowledge, drive and discipline on to the next generation of students.
